Old Fashioned Indoor Weenie Roast

May 27, 2019 by mgrc 1 Comment

Nothing says fun like roasting hot dogs over a fire in a full-size head of cabbage at the dining room table, does it?

You may need an Old-Fashioned drink to go with the old fashioned weenie roast.

Old-Fashioned Indoor Weenie Roast

Ingredients

  • 1 large head cabbage
  • Frankfurters
  • Canned liquid heat
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup mustard

Instructions

  1. Trim soiled outer leaves from cabbage head. Slice off the bottom of cabbage so cabbage sits upright steadily. Hollow out the top of the cabbage to make well for canned liquid heat. Place the can in well.
  2. Finely grate cabbage pieces left from making cabbage head and place in a saucepan. Add water and vinegar and bring to a low boil. Cook over medium heat 15 minutes.
  3. Remove from saucepan and drain; blend in mayonnaise and mustard and set aside.
  4. Cut frankfurters crosswise into thirds and skewer on 8-inch bamboo cocktail skewers. Spear into sides of cabbage.
  5. To serve, ignite canned heat. Invite guests to roast their weenies over the fire. Dip weenies in the cabbage-mustard sauce.

This is insane! And hilarious. And awesome! I wonder if people actually did this. or if it was dreamed up by the writer and published as a fun activity. Either way I am saving and suggesting this for my next get together. Thanks!
