Pizza Horns

January 17, 2018 by mgrc Leave a Comment

Everybody’s favorite standby-pizza- gets a new treatment. Ready-made bread dough is cut into triangles and filled with all the familiar ingredients: pepperoni, cheese, herbs, and sauce. These crescents are not only easy on the budget, but make for easy eating and entertaining. Great for snacks, too.

Substitute your favorite pizza toppings (mushrooms, sauteed onions, anchovies, sausage) for the green pepper. Frozen bread dough also comes in whole wheat, a good replacement for the white dough.

Makes 16 pizza horns.

Money-saving.

Cuisine American
Prep Time 35 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 50 minutes
Servings 16 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 1 lb loaves frozen bread dough
  • All-purpose flour
  • Olive oil
  • 1 14- oz can pizza sauce
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 pound mozzarella cheese grated
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 green pepper minced
  • 2-3 ounces pepperoni minced or chopped
  • 1 egg white lightly beaten

Instructions

  1. Thaw frozen bread in refrigerator overnight or at room temperature 2 to 3 hours.
  2. On lightly floured surface, roll out each loaf into a circle, about 10-inches in diameter. If dough is difficult to roll, pat or stretch dough with your hands until 1/4-inch thick. Brush surface with oil.
  3. With pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut each circle into 8 triangles or wedges.
  4. Generously spread surface with pizza sauce to which oregano and garlic powder are added. Leave about 1/4-inch margin on each side. Sprinkle with cheeses, green pepper, and pepperoni.
  5. Roll up each triangle beginning from the wide end. Curve ends to form crescents. Place on lightly oiled baking sheets. Brush tops with egg white. Sprinkle with additional oregano or parmesan cheese.
  6. Bake at 450 for about 15 minutes or until crescents are golden brown.
